This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years.

This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.

Part A: Curriculum Music
The school teaches music to children across the school through the Charanga Music Scheme.

For more information about Charanga, please click this link:
https://charanga.com/site/

One of the main reasons why we chose the Charanga scheme was the support it gives to children with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND).

At present we teach music to the children for 1 hour, three weeks out of four. On the fourth week the children learn about their termly topic and music is not routinely taught.

The Charanga scheme gives children the opportunity to learn to sing and play an instrument during lesson time, often as part of a small group or a whole-class ensemble.
Part B: Extra-Curricular Music
Presently the school does not offer music tuition outside of what is taught in lessons.
Part C: Musical Experience
Children can also sing twice a week in the school’s assemblies and there are opportunities to join the school choir for children in KS2.

There are opportunities to join the school choir for children in KS2 and children take part in local Carole concerts at Christmas.

Children in Early Years, KS1 and Year 6 also have opportunities to learn songs and play musical instruments as part of productions for parents and carers at Christmas and other key parts of the year.

As part of the Year 5 Residential trip, the children take part in a junk drumming workshop.

At Christmas the school provides a Pantomime for all children from a visiting musical group. There is no charge to parents or carers for this experience.
Part D: In the future
In the future the school is looking to see how it can open opportunities for children to learn a specific musical instrument, through tutoring routes and instrument loans.

We are also looking to make use on links we have to organisations in Leeds, such as Art Forms, who can provide specific music teaching to year groups. We aim to introduce this in Reception class in Jan 2025.
Further information
