Voice and support of children with SEND
Staff at Hunslet Carr are trained to use a ‘total communication’ approach to support children with SEND to express any views or worries. This could include children with speech sound difficulties where these difficulties make it challenging for adults to understand them, children with language difficulties and children with social communication and social interaction differences. 

Language difficulties include challenges understanding questions and / or difficulties formulating sentences and explanations and could be associated with another condition such as a learning disability or autism, or Developmental Language Disorder - DLD. 

​Some children’s communication and interaction differences mean that they are unable to clearly express their views and worries even with adaptations and supports. For these children we are highly reliant on adults who know them well interpreting their behaviour and being curious about any changes and patterns in their behaviour.
