PE & Sport Premium

Sports top orig

The PE and Sport Premium is designed to help primary schools improve the quality of the PE and sport activities we offer our children.

School Sport Funding is money that is provided by the government to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of Physical Education, sport and physical activity within schools.  The school has been in receipt of additional government funding specified as 'Sport Premium' since its introduction in September 2013.  For the academic year 2017-18, schools with 17 or more eligible pupils receive £16,000 and an additional payment of £10 per pupil.

Schools are free to spend the Sport Premium as they see fit since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for all the pupils within their responsibility.  This extra funding must be spent on Physical Education, school sport and physical activity.  Each of these are defined as follows:
Physical Education - the delivery of the curriculum within lesson time to all children by teachers.
School Sport - the extra-curricular activities and competitions that our children have the opportunity to                                  participate in.
Physical Activity - how we as a school promote exercise for enjoyment in addition to being an integral part                          of a healthy, active lifestyle.

As a school we are held accountable for how we use the additional funding. From April 2014 we have been required to publish online information regarding how we have invested the PE & Sport Premium and the impact it has made. To meet this requirement the following information has been produced which sets out the amount of Sport Premium we will receive and how we intend to use it.

We will utilise this extra funding to improve all aspects of Physical Education, sport and physical activity.  This includes maximising pupil progress, increasing participation in sport and physical activity, professional development for staff and to provide all children with the skills and knowledge required to lead a healthy and active lifestyle.

As a school we carefully consider how to spend our funding and the impact it will have on our children. We use information and guidance from the Youth Sport Trust to decide upon the most effective ways to spend the grant. For more information on this please follow this link:

We use the Sainsbury's Games Mark as an accreditation scheme, which is a nationally recognised kitemark for PE and school sport that helps us to identify priorities for our development plan. We have successfully achieved    the Gold Standard in the Sainsbury's Games Mark for 5 consecutive years.

Since our last Platinum application, Hunslet Carr Primary School has continued to embed physical activity as a fundamental part of our school culture, pushing beyond our previous successes to create deeper, more sustainable improvements.

1. Broadened Participation & Inclusion:
We have significantly increased the breadth of opportunities available to all pupils, ensuring even more children are engaging in physical activity regardless of their background or ability. Building on our earlier work with The Hunslet Club, we now offer even more diverse clubs, including inclusive sessions targeted at SEND pupils and girls-only sports to promote gender balance. This has led to a measurable increase in participation across all year groups and demographics.

2. Pupil Voice and Leadership:
Since the last application, we have amplified pupil voice in shaping our PE and sports offer. Our Sports Leaders and School Council now co-design and lead initiatives such as intra-school competitions, lunch-time activities, and health and wellbeing campaigns. This shift has not only increased engagement but also helped foster leadership and responsibility among pupils.

3. Curriculum Integration and Cross-Curricular Activity:
Our commitment to physical literacy has expanded into other areas of the curriculum. Teachers now embed movement and activity breaks within all lessons, and PE themes are being reinforced through PSHE, science, and even English writing tasks. This holistic approach supports wellbeing and learning retention.

4. Staff Development and Consistency:
While we were proud of the Real PE implementation in our last application, we have now trained all staff further to deliver high-quality PE consistently. Regular CPD and peer observations ensure that every teacher feels confident and supported in delivering engaging, challenging, and inclusive PE lessons.

5. Community and Parental Engagement:
We have deepened our partnership with families and local organisations. We now run termly “Family Activity Afternoons” and collaborate with local sports teams and health groups to run workshops, promoting healthy lifestyles both in and out of school. We’ve also maintained and grown our relationship with role models like Liam Cooper, and introduced new figures to keep inspiring our pupils.

6. Evidence of Impact:
The impact is evident in our repeated pupil voice surveys, which show increased enjoyment, self-confidence, and understanding of how physical activity supports mental health. Afterschool club attendance has nearly doubled, and there has been a noticeable reduction in behavioural incidents during breaktimes, thanks to structured activities now led by trained coaches and pupil leaders.

7. Sustainability and Future Planning:
We have built physical activity into our school improvement plan and budget planning, ensuring our progress is sustainable. We are also working toward gaining parent volunteers to support clubs, and training lunchtime supervisors to deliver active play without always relying on external coaches.
