At Hunslet Carr Primary School, inclusion is at the heart of everything we do. We are proud of our strong, needs-led SEND provision and our commitment to ensuring every child feels safe, understood, and able to thrive.

We work in close partnership with families and professionals to remove barriers to learning and support children to access a broad, balanced, and meaningful education.

Our SEND Provision

Our SEND provision follows a graduated response approach: Assess, Plan, Do, Review. This ensures that needs are identified early, support is carefully planned, and provision is regularly reviewed and adapted to meet each child’s individual needs. We continually adapt our classrooms, learning environments, routines, and teaching approaches to support a wide range of needs. Early identification and timely intervention are central to our practice and help prevent difficulties from escalating.

We are privileged to have access to an NHS Speech and Language Therapist for two days each week, supporting children with communication and interaction needs, including autism and associated social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. This includes assessment, targeted intervention, staff guidance, and support for parents.

We are proud to share that Hunslet Carr has been accredited as a Leeds Communication Friendly Setting (LCFS). This means that we place communication at the heart of everything we do, so that all children are supported to communicate, learn, and thrive for more information please click here.

Alongside this, our Art Psychotherapist works in school two days each week, offering therapeutic support for children and families where emotional wellbeing and mental health are a priority. This complements our wider SEMH provision and supports children to develop emotional regulation and resilience.

We also work closely with MindMate Support Team (MMST) who offer early emotional wellbeing support and the JESS Cluster to strengthen our early help offer. Through these partnerships, families can access emotional support, Early Help Plans and school-based counselling through Barca, ensuring joined-up support that reduces barriers to education.

Our Inclusion Team

Our SEND provision is delivered by a skilled Inclusion Team who work collaboratively with class teachers, families, and external professionals. This ensures consistent, coordinated, and child-centred support.

• SENCO – strategic leadership of SEND provision and statutory processes
• SENCO Assistant – coordination of provision and day-to-day communication
• Speech and Language Therapist (NHS) – specialist assessment and intervention, click here
• Art Psychotherapist – therapeutic support for emotional wellbeing, click here
• Autism Lead – autism-informed practice and environmental adaptations, click here
• SEMH Lead – coordination of social, emotional and mental health support
• Safeguarding Lead - overseeing all safeguarding, child protection/pupil welfare
• Attendance Officer – reducing barriers to attendance and promoting engagement
• Parent Support Worker – guidance, early help, and home-school liaison

The Inclusion Team meets regularly to assess needs, review progress, and plan next steps, ensuring the right support is in place at the right time.

Our Graduated Response

At Hunslet Carr Primary School, we follow a graduated response approach to supporting children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. This cycle of Assess, Plan, Do, Review ensures that support is needs-led, carefully planned, and regularly reviewed.

This process is ongoing and may involve increasing levels of support, including specialist advice or statutory assessment, where appropriate.
