History

Our children learn a breadth of historical knowledge, acquire geographical vocabulary and understanding, develop and apply their skills as historians each year as they move through school. We believe that our children should develop a deepening understanding of the relationship between the past and present, and how history affects us all still today.

Through our immersive topics, we ensure that we provide growing opportunities for our pupils to develop independent historical enquiry skills – so that they ask their own questions, investigate and generate their own conclusions.

We want them to experience and ‘feel’ historical events wherever possible – using resources, artefacts, visitors and visit experiences – so that it will help them to build a deeper understanding and connection with the past.

Picture
• I can learn new skills and knowledge, and have positive attitudes towards my achievements in history
• I enjoy finding out what life was like in the past
• I can talk about a significant person from the past and explain why they are important
• I can ask and answer questions about old and new artefacts
• I can answer questions successfully using different historical sources
• I can order, explain and describe events from the past
• I can plot events on a timeline and use dates accurately
• I can analyse artefacts and explain how they can be used to build a picture of the past
• I can identify and explain changes that happen over time
• I can explain differences and similarities across different periods in history
• I aspire to build my understanding of history and think about how it has influenced modern life
