School Council News - April 2025

Wow! We can’t believe that it’s already time to update the newsletter again! It feels like we just did the March one. We are edging closer to the SATs now so it’s very busy in Year 6 at the moment.

We’re looking forward to seeing all the eggs that will be decorated next week. Also, next week we get the pleasure of helping judge and host the Easter Bonnet Parade! We can’t wait to see how creative Key Stage One are!

Have a lovely Easter break,
Ryan and Ella.

School Council News - March 2025

This term, we have been working with Miss Roberts and the teachers to spot children who are having a positive playtime. When this happens, the School Council gives out positive playtime slips. When we walk around school, we notice that the slip chains are growing! Make sure that you keep up the positive playing, especially with the new equipment, so that we can give more out! We are looking forward to the prize, which will be given out before the Easter holidays.

Miss Roberts is trying to book this year’s visit to the Houses of Parliament. The trip has become very popular with other schools, so fingers crossed, she manages to book it this month!

Thank you for reading,
Ryan and Ella (Head Boy and Girl)

School Council News - January 2025

Happy New Year! We hope you all had a great Christmas break and New Year celebrations.
We are looking forward to starting a new year in school.

We have lots to look forward to this year, including our annual trip to the Leeds Youth Summit at Leeds Civic Hall where we get to meet other School Councils and the local councillors. We are also hoping to book our annual trip to the Houses of Parliament with the whole of the School Council in the summer.

We are looking forward to continuing to lead School Council meetings so that we can help make sure that our school continues to be a happy, healthy and safe place for all of us. Make sure that if you ever have any concerns that you speak to a member of the School Council so they can bring it to the meeting.

Thank you,
Ella and Ryan.
Head Girl and Head Boy.

School Council News - September 2024
Welcome to the School Council section of the newsletter. We are the new Head Boy and Head Girl, Ryan and Ella. This is our first newsletter! We are looking forward to adding to our section every month.
We hope you had a great summer holiday and you are raring to go!
We’ve just come back from our residential at Kingswood. The best thing we did was the leap of faith. We felt so nervous before doing it; Ella’s legs were shaking before she did it! We all proved that impossible is nothing and we are so proud of ourselves.
We are currently waiting to find out who is going to be joining us on the School Council this year. In the next newsletter we will let you know who it is.

Thank you,
Ella M and Ryan. Head Girl and Head Boy

School Council News
We hope you all had a good half term break. We are looking forward to the build up to Christmas!

The week beginning 18th November is UK Parliament Week and we are going to learn more about Parliament and how it works. This will prepare us for our annual trip to the Houses of Parliament in the summer.

The School Council have also started helping Miss Roberts with handing out Positive Playtime slips at playtimes. We have the important job of looking for children who are following our school rules. Are they Ready, Respectful and Safe outside? We are also thinking about what the next prize should be for the winning classes. Well done Beech and Spruce who were last term’s winners.

School Council News

We can’t believe this is our last ever newsletter! We have really enjoyed our year being Head Girl and Head Boy. Our highlight was Takeover Day! We loved working in Mr Lumb’s office and making some important decisions, such as what equipment to order for the playground.

We are in our busy period of the School Council now because it is almost Election Day. Not to be confused with the General Election! Everyone in school needs to decide who is going to be the next Head Girl and Head Boy. Election Day is Monday 8th July.
The candidates are:

Head Boy:
Ryan           Isaac          Ethan          Jacob B

Head Girl:
Ella M         Ella F           Berry           Lexi

Results day is 12th July.

We can’t finish this section without mentioning our long-awaited trip to the Houses of Parliament. We are going on Monday 15th July, and we can’t wait! Please keep up to date with all the School Council happenings on Facebook and Twitter. Have a great Summer everyone!!!
Elsie and David – your Head Girl and Head Boy for 2023-2024.

School Council News
Takeover Day is next Friday! It is also the launch of the Euros! We are planning a football themed day for the whole school mixed in with some Olympic Sports Day additions. We can’t wait to be Mr Lumb and lead the assemblies that we’ve planned. Make sure you follow X and Facebook on the day to keep updated.

Elsie and David.

School Council News
We have exciting news! We have managed to book the Houses of Parliament tour on Monday 15th July. It was action packed last year and very entertaining; David and I have been telling the school council all about it. We are looking forward to finding out what we will be doing in the afternoon. I hope it involves Pizza again!

On Tuesday 21st May, the Year 5 School Council members are attending the Leeds Children’s Mayor event at Leeds Civic Hall. Last year, I put myself forward for the job of Leeds Children’s Mayor and got shortlisted! I am hoping that one of our amazing Year 5 school councillors put themselves forward too.

On Monday 13th May, David and I will start to take our SATs in Spelling and Grammar, Reading and Maths, with the other Year 6 children. We have all been working hard to revise and prepare. We would like to wish all of Year 6 the best of luck, and I am sure we will all do well.

Thank you for reading,
Elsie and David.

School Council News
We hope you had a lovely Easter break, and we are hoping that the weather starts to improve!
We loved looking at all the Easter bonnets and the decorated eggs before the holiday and look forward to hearing who won the competitions on Friday.
Well done to everyone’s hard work!
In the School Council we have been looking at some of the things that we like in school and things that we wish we could improve. Everyone loves hot chocolate and the Star of the Week cushions because we believe it makes us feel important.
Ms Roberts is still trying to get us booked to go to the Houses of Parliament, but it is proving tricky this year! We have our fingers crossed for her!
Thank you for reading, Elsie, David, Lewis and Nancy.

School Council News

This month the school councillors from Year 5 and Year 6 went to the Leeds Youth Summit at the Civic Hall. If you have never been there, it is a very posh building in the middle of Leeds, with very expensive furniture and chandeliers.

Here we got to meet children from other Leeds schools who are on their school councils to discuss things that are impacting on children and young adults. We discussed things like litter and vaping, which we were all very worried about.

The best things about the event was the lunch! We got £6 each to spend at the café in the Rose Bowl building (which is part of one of the Universities). We all loved the food, especially the Brownies!

Miss Roberts is trying to book this year’s visit to the Houses of Parliament. She almost booked tickets this week but just as she went to pay for them, the website crashed. She is going to try again later in the month, when the booking site re-opens.

Thank you for reading,
David and Elsie (Head Boy and Girl)

School Council News
One of our goals in School Council this year is to do more assemblies and have more presence in school. Our focus for our first assembly was all about bullying and what to do if it was happening. One of the areas we reminded everyone about was Tootoot. Remember, if you need to tell a teacher at school about bullying then please use this app. You don’t have to put your name but if it serious then please put it so that the teachers can help you. Recently, we also joined in with Year 1’s sponsored run for the Dog’s Trust. Thank you for all the sponsorship money. The Dog’s Trust are coming in at the end of February so that we can learn how to look after dogs and we
can present them with the money raised. On Monday 26th February we are going to the Leeds Civic Hall for the Leeds Youth Summit with the Deputy Heads and Year 5 School Council. We are
looking forward to meeting local councillors and other children from school councils. Our next assembly, in March, we focus on the Leeds Youth Summit and what we did.
Thank you for reading,
Elsie and David.

School Council News

Happy New Year!

We have a lot happening this year in the School Council. This term we are looking forward to meeting Hilary Benn MP when we visit the Houses of Parliament. We can’t wait to catch the train to London and then to experience what it is like to go inside the amazing building we saw when the New Year’s Eve fireworks in London were happening.

In school we are continuing to try to improve our playground. We have designed posters that tell all the children how to play football in a kind and safe way.

Thank you.                                         Kirby and Harrison               Head Girl and Head Boy

School Council News
David and I have been quite busy recently. We have been helping Mr Lumb choose some new members of staff. We are currently organising our first assembly and soon we are going to be conducting a whole school survey sent out by the Children’s Commissioner called The Big Ambition Survey. This is to get children’s views across the country so we can have our say about the country too. I believe this is very important because we have important views too.

David, the Deputies and I helped the teachers and Mr Lumb with Parents’ Evening last week. We were a bit nervous at first, but we enjoyed the evening, and we hope that you had good meetings.

We are all looking forward to the Christmas activities happening around school, especially the Nativities, which we hope we will get to watch with you, and the Christmas Fayre. We hope to see lots of you there!

Thank you for reading,
Elsie Linnecor.
Head Girl.

School Council News

We wanted to share with you some very exciting things that are going to be happening over the coming months with the school council. Recently, we have helped Mr Lumb choose some new teachers for our school and in the next few weeks we will be helping him choose some new teaching assistants.

We are also in the process of arranging our Takeover Day, the day when the kids in the school take over from the adults. We will become Mr and Miss Lumb for the day and the other school councillors will become the teachers. We are already thinking about the lessons we would like to teach across the school and have lots of ideas.

Finally, we will be booking our annual trip to the Houses of Parliament. This will take place in the spring term and we are very excited about going to London, seeing this amazing building and learning more about democracy.

That is all for now. Elsie and David                 Head Girl and Boy

School Council News
This week Elsie went to the Leeds Children’s Mayor awards at Leeds Civic Hall. She was very confident and met lots of new people, including the new Lord Mayor. Unfortunately, Elsie did not become the new Leeds Children’s Mayor but we are all very proud of her and lucky to have her as our Head Girl.
This month all the classes from Year 1 to 5, have selected their school councillors. In our next meeting we will be coming up with exciting plans to make the school an even better place. We can’t wait to tell you what we have come up with.

This year on the school council we have:
Cherry Class - Harper & Jaxson

Beech Class - Willow & Billy

Willow Class - Ella A & Kian

Hazel Class - Scarlett & Jack

Chestnut Class - Lana & Freddie

Maple Class - Keanna & Connor

Palm Class - Holly & Armi

Spruce Class - Ella M & Ryan

Cedar Class - Ella F & Isaac

Elsie and David          Head Girl and Boy

Lewis and Nancy       Deputy Head Boy and Girl

School Council News
Welcome to the School Council section of the newsletter. Both the Head Girl and Boy usually write this but we have a special message from the Head Girl:

Hi, I’m Elsie, the Head Girl, but I am also running for the Leeds Children’s Mayor this year. As you know, poverty is an issue in this country now and the need for food banks is growing. When I first learnt about food banks from my mum I was shocked and knew that I wanted to help, in whatever way I could. Therefore, when I heard about the Leeds Children’s Mayor in a School Council meeting I knew this was my opportunity to help.
I want every school to have a growing area where they can grow just one thing for the food banks. I also think city wide events where money can be raised for food banks would be a great idea, as it would raise awareness too.
I believe that we can all make a difference if we work together. Children and young people under the age of 18 can vote, but you must make two votes. The link is:

https://surveys.leeds.gov.uk/s/LCMVote23/

Please vote for me so we can create real change together.
Thank you,
Elsie.
Head Girl.

School Council 2022-23

School Council News
Firstly, can we start with Take Over Day. What an amazing day! We have heard from the School Council members and our Year 6 friends how much they fun they had. We hope everyone else had fun too.
This is our final newsletter and we can’t let it pass without talking about some of our highlights of the year. The top one was obviously London and having a tour of the Houses of Parliament. What an experience!
Finally, we would like to say a massive thank you to the rest of the School Council members who have worked so hard all year to be a great asset to our amazing school. We hope everyone has a FANTASTIC summer holiday and wish us luck in High School!
Harrison and Kirby.

School Council News
We would like to start with welcoming David Moon into School Council. We are looking forward to working with you! This term we are focusing on preparing for Election Day and meeting the candidates for Head Boy and Head Girl. Once we know who all 8 are we will let you know.

As well as this we need to prepare for Takeover Day. During our last meeting we all discussed what we would like to base it on. This year we have all decided we would like to learn about diversity, in particular, different cultures in different countries so lots of planning to do!

At the end of May, the Year 5 members of the School Council are going to Leeds Civic Hall. Here they will:
  • Hear from Cllr Venner.
  • Meet the current Children’s Mayor and learn about his manifesto.
  • Meet the Lord Mayor of Leeds.
  • Take part in fun activities and workshops.
  • Learn about and write a manifesto ready for the 2023 / 2024 Children’s Mayor elections.
This year we are hoping to have a candidate for the Leeds Children’s Mayor. More information to follow!
Thank you for reading,
Harrison and Kirby.

School Council News
Firstly, we would like to tell you about our amazing, one in a lifetime trip to the Houses of Parliament. It was fantastic! I think I speak for every member of the School Council and I can say it was the best trip we’ve ever been on! We got to go into the House of Commons and the House of Lords and we learnt so much about how the government works and how laws are made.
Mr Lumb and Miss Roberts even took us to the Natural History Museum where we got to see lots of amazing exhibits including feeling what it would have been like to be in an Earthquake!
I think Harrisons favourite part of the day was the dough balls, pizza and ice-cream he had in Pizza Express just before we came home.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to meet our local MP, Hilary Benn, but we can exclusively reveal that he is going to attend Results Day in July when he will announce who is the next Head Boy and Head Girl. This term we will be preparing for Election Day and Takeover Day, where School Council and Year 6 will take over staff roles in school. More information to follow.
Thank you for reading,
Kirby and Harrison (Head Girl and Boy)

School Council News

I don’t think there is anywhere else to start than our upcoming trip to London!

Everyone on the council can’t wait to go on a train and then an underground train when we get there. Mr Lumb has told us that we will be going to the Natural History Museum in the morning to see the exhibition on Dinosaurs. We can’t wait as one of our favourite programs is Camp Cretaceous on Netflix.

After lunch we will be making our way to The Houses of Parliament. We will get to go inside and have a tour of the building before finding out how laws are made. If Hilary Benn, our MP is there at the time, he has said he will come and say hello.

Harrison is really looking forward to the next bit – Pizza Express. Mr Lumb has said if we are really good during the day he will take us all to Pizza Express near Kings Cross Train Station just before we come home. We are planning to get back to Leeds at 9.30 pm so it will have been a long but amazing day.

Thank you for reading,
Kirby and Harrison (Head Girl and Boy)

School Council News:
This month we have been involved in interviewing for the new Attendance Officer and it has been great to help Mr Lumb choose someone new to work for our school.

We hope you have all enjoyed the video we helped create to showcase our school. We are very proud of it; especially everyone who spoke so well. Well done! If you haven’t seen it yet make sure you look at the school’s YouTube channel.

An extra special thankyou to Harrison and Ryan who were interviewed about our amazing new library by BBC Radio Leeds. It was a great experience and we feel lucky to be involved.

Right now, our attention is focused on our upcoming London trip where we will tour around the Houses of Parliament. We are excited to find out about our itinerary!

We have recently written the new child friendly anti-bullying policy. We worked as a group to decide what was really important. We are looking forward to sharing it with everyone it is really important.
Last week, in our Happy Healthy Time, we asked our classes for Two Stars and a Wish.
All the staff in school are caring, kind and you can talk to them.
We all love the rewards that we get in school, such as Star Assembly, McDonald’s reading treat with Mr Lumb and hot chocolate.
Our wish – we need to review playground equipment for playtimes, including lunchtime.

We wanted to share with you some very exciting things that are going to be happening over the coming months with the school council.

We are also in the process of arranging our Take Over day, the day when the kids in the school take over from the adults. We will become Mr and Miss Lumb for the day and the other school councillors will become the teachers.

Finally, we have just found out that Mr Lumb and Miss Roberts will be taking us to London to visit the Houses of Parliament. Our visit will be in March 2023 and if we are lucky, when we are at the H of P we will get to meet Hilary Benn, the MP for Leeds.

School Council News:

We can't believe that this is our final newsletter! This year has flown by! It's been great to get the School Council up and running properly again after COVID. The stars and wishes this month were how much we all love Hunslet Boys' Club at lunch time and school dinners. The wish was that we could have longer to eat our lunches.

Right now, we are currently helping the candidates with their speeches because Election Day is Monday! We can't wait to hear them and to see who gets the most votes. Remember, every vote counts and all votes should remain private.

Thank you for reading all of our newsletters,
Isabelle, Carson, Angel and Armandas.

School Council News:

We hope that you had a great week off and enjoyed the Jubilee celebrations. We had a street party picnic on the last day before we broke up to celebrate and it was brilliant!

Since last term we have been recording our very own Newsround. We are all becoming a lot more confident when speaking in front of the camera; especially the younger members of the School Council.

Every month the School Council members in their classes take over part of the Circle Time lesson. We think this is great because everyone in school now gets their opinions heard, such as whether they like school dinners or not. We are looking forward to hearing what the stars and wishes are this month.

Thank you for reading, Isabelle and Armandas.

This week the children fed back what their classes told them in Circle Time. Some great feedback. The school love their school dog, Arlo, inspirational visitors (such as Liam Cooper) and all the exciting lessons they have.

This week the School Council met to discuss their part in Circle Time. We practised how our part in the lesson would run. We are finding out what our classes like and would want to change in our school.
Holly, in Year 2, also shared her news about her sponsored walk.

School Council News:
We hope that you had a lovely Easter holiday and lots of chocolate! I've already had three Easter eggs (Carson). We are really happy that the sun is finally starting to shine every morning, making us happy and ready to come into school.

This term we are going to be looking at re-introducing our playground buddies and launching our very own SC Newsround (coming soon!)

Thank you for reading,
Isabelle and Carson.

School Council News:
What a February! It was the best month! We got to meet Liam Cooper then two weeks later we took over the school with the rest of the School Council and Year 6.
Liam Cooper's visit was very special to us and the whole school. He showed us that Impossible really is Nothing! It was fantastic hearing about how resilient he is. Liam Cooper is an inspiration to all of us at Hunslet Carr!
Everyone enjoyed Takeover Day; it was so much fun. It was great seeing all the children taking on different roles around the school such as teachers, dinner staff and sport leaders. We personally enjoyed leading the Star Assemblies with Mr Lumb.
We hope March is going to be just as busy!

Thank you for reading,
Isabelle and Carson.

School Council News:
So far this year, thing have been a little quiet. What with COVID it is hard for us all to work with each other as we are trying to keep mixing between year groups down.
However, February is going to be the month where things start to get busy for the school councillors.
On Wednesday, 9th Feb, Mr Lumb and Miss Roberts will be taking us around the local streets near school to pick up litter and make our community a nicer place to be.
Towards the end of the month we will be taking over the school for a day. The school council will come dressed as the Headteacher, Assistant Heads, Teachers, Caretakers, Office Staff and Dinner Staff.
While Carson and I will be dressing up as Mr Lumb, the school counsellors who are teachers will be teaching lessons that day on the importance of looking after your mental health. We can’t wait!
We are also excited about another project that is happening in school and looking forward to letting you know more about it during next month’s newsletter.

Hello,

The whole of School Council have now been elected and if you come into school you will see everyone proudly wearing their badges. During our first meeting our Head Boy, Carson, brought up the important issue of Climate Change and what we, as a school and community, can do to help our local and wider environment. This is an area which everyone on the council is passionate about therefore something we will be addressing this year. Look out for further information about this as we have lots of ideas!

School Council Meeting
3.11.21

A great first meeting of the School Council. Every member introduced themselves and told the other members an interesting fact. We are looking forward to a busy year with our agenda filling up after one session!

Our Head Boy, Carson, raised the important issue of Climate Change and how we, as a school, can help the environment. We talked about recycling and decided this was the way we could make sure that we are doing our bit properly. A few ideas to engage children (and staff!) about this important issue was to tell their classes when they returned, prepare and present an assembly, hold another Takeover Day and have the main focus as Climate Change and what we can do to help.

Please come back and find out how much progress we have made with this! We are very excited about tackling our first major issue.

School Council News

We have lots of ideas which will be shared with you in the next newsletter and on our section of the school website.
 Thank you,
Isabelle and Carson.

The votes have now been counted and we would like to introduce you to our new Head Boy and Girl and our Deputy Head Boy and Girl.

This month classes from Year 1 to 5, have selected their class representatives.
On the School Council’s first agenda we need to elect the new Head Boy and Head Girl. As a school council we will be working to support children in Year 6 to write their speeches and record them ready to try to earn people’s votes.
Keep your eye on the school website for the speeches and results! Good luck to each candidate!

This year because of COVID-19 we had to hold our elections for Head Girl and Boy in a very different way. First of all, we had to wait until the children were in school and in Year 6. Then we couldn't go to the hall to give our candidate speeches, so we filmed them and put them on the school's Youtube Channel. After that, all the children voted in their classrooms and sent the results through to Ms Roberts who then filmed the results with Mr Lumb. The whole school then watched the Youtube videos to see the results.
You can see the videos we are talking about by following the links below.

Unfortunately, at this moment in time, our school council haven't been able to meet or make the school better through our ideas, but we hope that changes soon.
School Council News
We have finally had our first School Council meeting. All the members received their badges and we discussed the upcoming final months of this academic year.

Firstly, Jamie explained his involvement in a governor's meeting all about his experiences in lockdown. Well done Jamie for speaking so well!

Members of the school council have been trying to persuade Mr Lumb to get a school dog. He listened to the powerful arguments put forward and at the moment is getting all the necessary information he needs to be able to make a decision. The dog would need to live at the house of one of the teachers and it would need time in the day to go for walks, so it is not as easy as just saying yes, but here on the council we all have our fingers crossed.

Over the coming weeks we are going to be concentrating on our upcoming Election Day to elect the new Head Boy and Head Girl.
