Year 2 Curriculum

In year 2 we still continue to embed the Letters and Sounds programme, revisiting phases 5 and 6
with a big focus on the spelling of common exception words.

Topic

We are continuing with or topic of Christopher Columbus where the classes have been debating whether he was a hero or villain. This will lead on to learning about modern day travel and comparing this with the past. In doing so, the children will consider changes that were made because of his discoveries. This will give us an opportunity to discuss and explore stereotypes and link to our own time.

PE

In recent weeks, at least 50% of both classes have not had an appropriate PE kit to wear in their sessions. All children must bring a change of clothes for:
Indoor PE on a Wednesday afternoons for both classes.
Outdoor PE on a Thursday mornings for both classes.
PE Kit – For indoor PE, children will need black shorts, white t-shirt and black pumps. For Outdoor PE, children should bring black jogging bottoms.

Home Learning

Each week, your children will have some maths work to complete and spellings to learn. Please return homework for Wednesdays. Reading books will also soon be given out.

Listening to your child read every night for 5-10 minutes will make an incredible difference to your child’s learning. By the end of the year, the children are expected to read lengthy texts for their Reading SATS so it is vitally important for the children to be building up their pace, fluency and confidence in their reading.

Please expect to be asked about it if your child is not reading regularly at home.
