English - Writing

Picture
It is our intent at Hunslet Carr Primary School to provide children with a high-quality education in English that will teach them to read, write and speak fluently, enabling them to communicate their ideas and emotions to others effectively.
Through the Talk for Writing Process, we teach the children writing techniques and introduce them to new vocabulary in order to develop the confidence and skills to write well for a range of purposes and audiences. We strive to teach the basics – grammar, spelling, handwriting and punctuation – to encourage creativity and to develop the confidence, desire and ability to express their views and opinions both orally and in writing. The Talk for Writing Process enables the children to learn to write for a particular genre through imitating a model, innovating on that model and then finally inventing their own text based on their learning.

Writing is a crucial part of our curriculum - we strongly believe that there should be no ceiling placed on the learning of any individual child. All children from Early Years Foundation Stage to Year 6 are provided with many opportunities to develop and apply their writing skills across the curriculum.

Our writing opportunities are based on a topic, whole class text or recent experience. We want to ensure our children are challenged in the contexts they study and at the same time they are supported to bridge the gap between this and their own experiences so that the writing they produce can be personal, innovative and high-quality.

At Hunslet Carr, we intend to provide the children with the opportunities to write a variety of genres across Fiction, Non-Fiction and Poetry.

In Writing, children are taught to plan, revise and evaluate.  To be able to do this effectively, children will focus on developing effective transcription and effective composition. They will also develop an awareness of the audience, purpose and context, and an increasingly wide knowledge of vocabulary and grammar. We also intend for children to leave school being able to use fluent, legible and speed handwriting.

In Spelling, teachers will show pupils how to understand the relationships between words, how to understand nuances in meaning, and how to develop their understanding of figurative language. They will also teach pupils how to work out and clarify the meanings of unknown words and words with more than one meaning. We have a focus on handwriting development to free up working memory and speed up the writing process. Spelling teaching combines the use of Spelling Shed and skills to enable children remember difficult words (e.g. words from the Statutory spelling lists).
