PSHE

PSHE is taught throughout our curriculum and learning themes and topics are taught in each year group meeting the needs of our learners. We want children to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. Through lessons, circle times and class discussions, we aim to develop the children's social and emotional learning.

Our children learn a breadth of knowledge surrounding their and others personal, social, health and emotional needs. They develop skills to help them thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. From making responsible decisions about alcohol to succeeding in their first job. We believe that PSHE education helps pupils to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up.

What is PSHE?

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is a school subject through which children develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes help pupils to stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. PSHE education helps children to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life.

PSHE at Hunslet Carr

At Hunslet Carr Primary School we recognise the importance of children’s personal, social and health development. Our school aims are for all our children to have 'High expectations'’, be ‘Caring’, have 'Positive Attitudes’ and be 'successful'. School has a significant role to play working alongside parents and the community, in enhancing children’s quality of life and personal growth.

We help each child develop self-esteem and self-awareness, a sense of increasing responsibility, the ability to make informed choices and a framework for a healthy and safe lifestyle. The children have an awareness of the needs of others, of individual differences and a positive attitude towards equal opportunities and life in a multicultural society.

Staff act as role models for pupils and PSHE is important in the ethos of the school. Much of the teaching in PSHCE is based on the active involvement of pupils through opportunities provided by the school. Teaching methods particularly suited to this kind of approach include games, simulations, circle time, case studies, drama and role plays, problem solving exercises, questionnaires, surveys, open ended questions and sentences, plus group work of various kinds.

Some of the key areas taught across the school are:

 *Relationship and sex  education
*Drug, alcohol and tobacco education
*Keeping safe and managing risk
*Mental health and emotional wellbeing
*Physical health and wellbeing
*Identity, society and equality
*Careers, economic wellbeing and financial capability
